As a reminder, the first photograph, or at least the oldest surviving photograph, was taken by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1826 or 1827. Looking at the whole of human history, we only had the opportunity to photograph people and events for a tiny period of time, so we never really know what countless of the most famous personalities in history looked like. Fortunately, we have photos of some of them.

CHARLES DARWIN

Charles Darwin is one of the most famous naturalists in history. He was one of the first to claim that all living things descended from common ancestors.

Although at that time his theories were largely rejected by other scientists and religious institutions, his hypothesis of evolution as a result of natural selection is now considered one of the foundations of modern science. He published his findings on evolution in 1859 in his book On the origin of Species.

HARRIET BEECHER STOWE

Abolitionist and author Harriet Beecher Stowe is best known for having written the now-famous book Uncle Tom’s Cabin, published in 1852. The novel depicts life in the United States at that time, which strengthened the North and angered the South which helped her lighting on the harsh treatment of slaves in the country. Her book became internationally known and served to inspire others to rise up against slavery, especially in the North.

In her life, Stowe authored 30 books and three travel memoirs, many of which dealt with social issues and her attitude to them at that time. Today, her works are considered very influential.
